The Dwaas Kill Nature Preserve is a 250-acre nature preserve located between Kinns and Pierce Roads, hosting many different species of plants and animals. You can enter the preserve in a few different places, but the main entrance is mid-way along Pierce Road. The trails are rugged, nature trails, and there are some wet patches along the way.

The Long Kill, the Cooley Kill and the Dwaas Kill streams all converge within the Dwaas Kill Nature Preserve, making this a special place within the greated Dwaas Kill Watershed. The site has groundwater seeps, and an amazing array of different types of wetlands, as well as sandy soil uplands, and remains of moulding clay mining areas. The Saratoga County Sewer District has major utility lines running underground through the site, installed way before this natural area may have been fully appreciated.
The Town of Clifton Park acquired the property with assistance from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund, from the Van Patten family in 2006. The Van Pattens built hundreds of homes in Clifton Park in the 1960s through 1990s.
Lots of old garbage and what looks like oil from old rusted 55g drums leakin into the creek...
ReplyDeleteWas part of the trail built over a old dump?...I will never go back, its a let down...
Yes, this used to be an old..VERY old dumpsite. My family's farm was on Pierce Road, and we used to dig up all kinds of old (1800's) bottles there, more than we could count and in the 70's due to the overgrowth of bushes, people used to drive trucks in and unload...possibly with the consent of the then Land barons who bought up ALL the land in the area in the 70's...
ReplyDeletePS- I personally went to the State Museum and went behind the scenes to point out that this IS an archaeologically significant site, especially across the from the Kill, in the area adjacent to the south of Mazzone Hospitality. Between the eastern edge of this property and the Northway, there used to be a plethora of arrowheads up on the hill. And directly across from this same property is where the dump used to be. On a website, it is incorrectly stated that sand used to be mined here...sand was only mined on the plots right next to the railroad tracks..the sand was never mined on the Kill side of the road. I wish the State would investigate these areas, especially on the hill near the northway, as I wonder if the construction of the truck dispatch center disturbed the site. If C.P. wants to know the history of the area, they can look up the families on old deeds who used to live here. We are still here. My grandmother is 98 and grew up there...
